Take 365 days of self-portraits
I am going to start this, as it is one of those things that I think becomes a habit. I need to figure out how to take a proper self-portrait first.
See while, I enjoy photography, I normally on photograph landscapes, scenes, or specific non-human things. Photography of people is a specific challenge as people are not static. People move, they have emotion that shows, people are sensitive to how they look and so on. This means that normally before you take a person's photo you want to get permission. There are photographers that get around this, if you have the right charisma, gear, and environment. Gear wise you need a really fast lens, short range, no zoom (must be a prime lens), and image stabilization. You then need to know how to talk to people or how to get them to react in such a way that they will let you take their picture without feeling as if their privacy was violated. Then you need the right situation. You cannot just go walking and expect to get photos, but you should be ready to take one. Places where people are in a good mood or happy makes it much easier to broach the subject and get their permission.
You may think none of this applies when taking a self-portrait though. You have a static or nearly static setup usually. A defined background, such as a white wall or single color is needed. You need a tripod, a remote activation trigger, and a seat. You'll want to have the same setup each day so you can track yourself, your changes, and what happens - and be ok with it. So, in a way, these same questions do apply. You need an environment you are ok with, and you need to be in the right mood to want to take your picture each and every morning.
I've a nice camera, but that's about it. I'm not sure I would be ok with a single photo taken every day as soon as I wake up, without a smile or doing my hair; something that is just me and yet it has to be in the morning. In the evening I will space it too often, and where I sleep is often unknown.
In one year, I'll post an update; maybe a gif that shows all the changes and we can see how the lines on my face change.
